Green manure

In the glorious warm sunshine on Saturday I weeded one of the ex-onion beds that hadn't been re-planted with anything and sowed a green manure - Phaeceila 'something'.
It has really cool shaped seeds (if you can see in the photo above). Shame my camera can't take a better close up.

Yeah the picture doesn't do their strangeness justice. They're really spiky!!

Be careful with Phaeceila, it can get out of hand. It is an annual here on the East Cost (USA) but it seeds itself in quite easily. We use it as a quick ground cover and then rip it out by the handful as soon as it finishes flowering.

Amy - thanks for the heads up. Plan to dig it in before it flowers although I'll leave a small patch for the bees.
